In Texas Hold'em and most poker variants, the best 5-card hand wins the pot. Here are all 10 hands from strongest to weakest — the foundation of every poker strategy.
From the globally dominant Texas Hold'em to the action-packed Omaha — here are all the poker formats available on Indian platforms.
Position is the most important non-card factor in poker. Acting last gives you more information — making it the most profitable position at the table.
| Position | Acts | Quality | Strategy | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UTG (Under the Gun) | First pre-flop | Worst | Play only premium hands (AA, KK, QQ, AK) | Early Position |
| UTG+1, UTG+2 | 2nd, 3rd | Very Weak | Tight range — top 10-15% of hands | Early Position |
| Middle Position (MP) | Middle | Moderate | Open up range slightly — top 20-25% of hands | Middle |
| Hijack (HJ) | 3rd from last | Good | Open wider — can steal from late positions occasionally | Late-Middle |
| Cutoff (CO) | 2nd from last | Very Good | Wide opening range — attack blinds aggressively | Late Position |
| Button (BTN) | Last post-flop | Best! | Widest range possible — play almost any playable hand. Attack relentlessly. | Button = King |
| Small Blind (SB) | First post-flop | Very Weak | Forced half-bet. Despite discount, acts first post-flop — strategic disadvantage. | Blind |
| Big Blind (BB) | Last pre-flop | Mixed | Forced full bet but acts last pre-flop. "Defend" BB against late-position steals with wider range. | Blind |
Poker is India's deepest skill game. These strategies separate consistent winners from recreational players — study each level systematically.
Play only strong starting hands, especially in early position. Premium hands: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK, AQ. Playable: 10-10, 99, 88, AJ, KQ, suited connectors (6♠7♠). Fold everything else from early position. Tighten your range before widening it.
Play more hands in late position (Cutoff, Button) and fewer in early position. From the Button, you act last in every post-flop round — the most profitable seat at any table. Even mediocre hands become playable when you have positional advantage.
Never play with more than 5% of your poker bankroll in a single session. At cash tables: sit with 20–30 buy-ins for your chosen stake. At tournaments: never risk more than 2-5% of bankroll in a single tournament. Variance in poker is enormous — proper bankroll management prevents ruin.
Pot odds help you decide whether to call. Formula: Call if pot odds % > your hand equity %. Example: pot is ₹200, opponent bets ₹100 (total pot = ₹300). You must call ₹100. Pot odds = 100/300 = 33%. If your hand has more than 33% equity (chance of winning), calling is mathematically correct.
Bluff with hands that have equity (semi-bluffs) — e.g., a flush draw that could improve on the next card. Pure bluffs (no outs) should be rare, sizing-appropriate, and believable given your represented range. The best bluffs tell a consistent story across all streets — pre-flop, flop, turn, and river.
Track opponents' tendencies: Are they tight or loose (how often do they play hands)? Are they passive or aggressive (do they bet/raise or check/call)? Look for patterns: players who always c-bet, players who only raise with strong hands, players who never fold to a river bet. Exploit these tendencies systematically.
Instead of putting opponents on a specific hand, think about their range — the full set of hands they could possibly have given their actions. Ask: "What range of hands could my opponent have that would make them play this way?" Then choose the response that has the highest expected value against that range, not just against one specific hand.
GTO poker means playing a balanced strategy that cannot be exploited — mixing value bets and bluffs in mathematically optimal proportions. GTO is the theoretical "correct" solution to poker. Advanced players use GTO as a baseline and deviate toward exploitative strategies against specific opponents who have identifiable leaks in their game.
ICM (Independent Chip Model) values tournament chips relative to prize money — chips lost are worth more than chips gained due to diminishing returns. Near the money bubble, tight ICM play often means folding hands you'd play in a cash game. Understanding ICM is essential for consistent deep tournament runs and profitable final table decisions.
Online poker in India exists in a complex but generally positive legal landscape. Indian courts — including multiple High Courts — have consistently recognised poker as a game of skill, distinct from pure games of chance. The landmark Karnataka High Court ruling explicitly stated that poker involves significant skill and cannot be classified as gambling in the traditional sense. Goa and Sikkim have specific regulated frameworks permitting licensed poker operations. For most Indians, access to online poker occurs through internationally licensed offshore platforms. There is no central Indian federal law specifically prohibiting individuals from accessing such platforms. Always verify the applicable laws in your specific state before playing — some states (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana) have stricter local regulations.
Poker is fundamentally different from pure chance games because the outcome over many hands is overwhelmingly determined by skill. Evidence that poker is a skill game: (1) Consistent winners exist — the same players win at poker year after year (world poker champions, online grinders) at rates statistically impossible if the game were purely luck. (2) Mathematical edge — skilled players consistently make better probability-based decisions (pot odds, fold equity, hand equity calculations). (3) Bluffing and psychology — reading opponents, managing game theory, and making deceptive plays have no equivalent in luck-based games. (4) Legal recognition — multiple Indian and international courts have formally ruled poker a skill game. Over a single hand, luck dominates. Over 10,000+ hands, skill is the overwhelming determinant of results.
Texas Hold'em is the overwhelmingly recommended starting point for Indian poker players. It has simpler rules (2 hole cards, unlimited use of community cards), the largest player pool (easier to find games), more learning resources available in Hindi and English, and the lowest stakes games attracting weaker opposition — ideal for learners. Omaha (PLO) is the second step — more complex due to the "must use exactly 2 hole cards" rule and the four-card hole card distribution creating significantly stronger average hand strengths. Experienced Texas Hold'em players often find PLO refreshing and highly profitable once they understand the adjusted hand strength values and the importance of nut draws in this variant.
Cash tables and tournaments have different risk profiles and skill requirements. Cash tables offer: consistent hourly earnings for skilled players, ability to quit any time, lower variance per session, and the ability to immediately rebuy if you lose. Each chip has a fixed real-money value. Tournaments offer: potential for large payouts relative to buy-in (50x–500x), a level playing field where a ₹100 buy-in player can win a massive prize, and the excitement of progressive elimination format. However, tournaments have high variance — you can play well for hours and still not finish in the money. Beginners should start with small-stakes cash tables to build fundamental skills before entering tournaments.
Bankroll management is the most underrated poker skill. Recommendations: For cash tables, maintain at least 20 buy-ins for your chosen stake level — if you play ₹10/₹20 blinds with a standard 100BB buy-in (₹2,000), your poker bankroll should be at least ₹40,000. For tournaments, never invest more than 2–5% of your total bankroll in a single tournament. Move down in stakes if your bankroll drops below 15 buy-ins — not doing so risks complete poker bankroll ruin through normal variance. Keep poker funds completely separate from everyday finances — your poker bankroll should be money you can genuinely afford to lose without affecting your life.
